Our Father

for SATB voices with double divisi

This beloved prayer is of eternal worth for Christians, because it is explicitly given, and commanded, by Jesus. Not only does it contain every petition a Christian might long to pray, but it also asks the Father for everything one might need in this life on earth.

This setting of the Lord’s Prayer is intended to be a relatively simple rendition. The simplicity of harmony reflects the simple, profound nature of each petition given by Christ to pray. It is through-composed to allow the music to reflect each of the seven petitions individually. The music remains rather reserved, dipping only slightly into polyphonic textures, until the final “For Thine is the glory…,” where it gradually breaks into double divisi, and each chord strongly resounds with the proclamation of the righteousness of God, which is ours in Christ.
