The text for this piece is a combination of the ancient Kyrie Eleison (Lord, Have Mercy) and text adapted from the confession spoken during the evening office of Compline. It is a succinct confession, placing the cause of sin on the sinner, laying it before God in repentance, expressing faith in the saving work of Jesus, and trusting in the hope of eternal life.

The setting begins by illustrating the brokenness and utter helplessness of the sinner pleading for the mercy of God. The soloist joins the choir, representing the sinner coming into the presence of God to ask for forgiveness. As the piece progresses, the music becomes warmer and brighter, finally breaking into a major key. It ends with a sweet, quiet, restful petition for mercy in the assurance of the promises of Christ.
